A wash and a good wax can make a car look great, until the sun hits it just right and you see a web of fine scratches under the surface. That's when you've hit the limit of what cleaning can do, and the paint itself needs work. Here are five signs your vehicle is ready for paint correction.
1. Swirl marks in direct sunlight
This is the most common one. Step into the sun and you'll see fine circular scratches, like a spider web, all over the paint, especially on the hood and trunk. They come from years of washing and drying, and no amount of soap removes them because they're in the clear coat. Correction polishes them out.
2. Your paint looks dull or hazy
If your color used to be deep and rich and now looks flat or cloudy even after a wash, that's oxidation and micro-scratching dulling the surface. Correction restores the depth and clarity, often bringing back a finish people forgot their car had.
3. Water spots that won't wash off
Hard-water spots and mineral etching can bond to and even etch into the clear coat. If they stay after washing and drying, they've gone past the surface, and correction (sometimes with a clay bar and iron removal first) is what clears them.
4. Light scratches and scuffs
Not every scratch can be polished out, but the majority of light-to-moderate scratches that sit within the clear coat can be dramatically reduced or removed entirely. If your fingernail doesn't catch in the scratch, there's a good chance correction will help.
5. You're about to get a ceramic coating
This one's preventative. A ceramic coating seals in whatever condition your paint is in, so if you coat over swirls and scratches, you lock them in for years. Correcting first gives you a flawless base, so the coating protects a finish that actually looks its best.
One-step or two-step?
